Principles
Jeffrey & Captain Drakkar Noir!
Jeffrey grew up riding ponies and horses, but like many people, life eventually took him away from the barn. After decades as an entrepreneur, he returned to riding in his late 40s—and quickly rediscovered how much horses had always meant to him. That renewed passion ultimately led him to create the kind of tack shop he felt his local equestrian community was missing: welcoming to all disciplines, focused on community, and offering both quality new products and accessible consignment finds.
The name has its own story. Jeffrey originally wanted to call the store Equestrians Anonymous, but believed the name was unavailable. He opened instead as Jeffrey’s Horse and Hounds, inspired by his love of foxhunting. About six months later, he discovered that Equestrians Anonymous was available after all and began transitioning to the name he had wanted from the beginning. Today, the business is known as Equestrians Anonymous at Jeffrey’s Horse and Hounds.
At the center of Jeffrey's life as an equestrian is Drakkar Noir, his striking black Friesian-Percheron cross. Jeffrey describes Drakkar as sweet, flashy, calm under saddle, and game for anything. The two enjoy showing, riding, and especially foxhunting together. Their partnership represents what Jeffrey loves about horses: the relationship between horse and rider and the shared experience of getting out and enjoying the sport.
Jeffrey brings more than 30 years of entrepreneurial experience to the business and is deeply involved in the Massachusetts horse community. His community involvement has included the South Shore Horsemen’s Council, Norfolk Hunt Club, Marion Horse Show, and Massachusetts Horsemen’s Council. He also believes strongly in creating opportunities for equestrians to connect, learn, and support one another.
At the store, customers can find new and consignment saddles and tack, English riding apparel and breeches, boots, blankets and sheets, bits, bridles, girths, horse care and stable equipment, safety gear, children’s riding and show clothing, foxhunting attire, gifts, and other equestrian essentials. Inventory spans disciplines and price points, with an emphasis on helping customers find quality equipment that works for both horse and rider.
Saddle fitting is an important service at Equestrians Anonymous, provided by Madalaine Baer, a professional saddle fitter who works with the store and its customers. Jeffrey’s own experience finding a saddle for Drakkar reinforced his belief in the importance of proper fit and having knowledgeable professionals available to help riders make informed decisions.
More than a retail store, Jeffrey envisioned Equestrians Anonymous as a community hub for horse people—a place to shop, consign, learn, share knowledge, and connect with other equestrians. He hosts monthly social events after regular store hours, giving people who work traditional 9-to-5 schedules an opportunity to shop when the store is normally closed. Each evening includes an educational seminar, light refreshments, and time to talk horses and connect with fellow equestrians.Learn about upcoming events by following Equestrians Anonymous on Facebook.
Jeffrey and Equestrians Anonymous were featured in Community Horse’s Fall/Winter 2025 Horseperson profile, highlighting his journey back to riding, Drakkar Noir, the founding of the store, and his commitment to the equestrian community.
